Tools of the Trade

To get yourself started doing needlepoint you basically need:
  • Needlepoint canvas
  • Stretcher bars and tacks(if you’re using them)
  • Needles/threader/scissor
  • Threads/Fibers
  • Comfy Chair or Couch
  • Good Light
To begin with always remember that this is a hobby and you want to enjoy it and do what makes you comfortable. Everything we say is just a suggestion.
Your canvas
Make sure your needlepoint canvas is bound around the edges with either tape or fabric. This prevents scratches to you or raveling.
Stretcher Bars
These provide a stable working surface, preventing distortion of the canvas and maintaining even tension. They also provide a taut working space which is helpful when doing fancy, longer stitches. It’s definitely more cumbersome when traveling with your needlepoint and that’s why many stitchers refrain from bars and roll the canvas or fold it to fit in a handbag or a pocket. Your choice.
Needles
Always be sure to use the correct size needle for the mesh you’re using as well as a few different sizes for various fibers. Usually a 20 needle is perfect for a 13 or 14 mesh while a 22 or 24 is great for an 18 mesh and sometimes an 18 needle comes in handy with its larger eye for a wool or a wool blend or any thicker fiber.  Try them all and see what size you like!

Where should you sit
It’s always best to sit on a comfortable chair where there is good lighting and back support. Some stitchers stitch in bed or outside which is all good as long as you can keep your canvas and threads clean and close at hand. I personally curl up on my couch with my lamp next to me.
Lighting is so important
Some stitchers use high hats or a regular lamp or even sunlight but the best is to have a good lamp right next to your chair. It is imperative to have good lighting and even a magnifier if needed. I personally love an inexpensive lamp from Amazon. NXONE LED floor lamp.  It’s flexible, lightweight, has many modes of light and brightness and works great. Always have the lamp over your left shoulder if you’re a right handed person and your right shoulder if you’re a lefty therefore not having any shadows on your canvas. You never want to strain your eyes or not be able to see all the details clearly.
Now you’re ready to needlepoint!
Happy Stitching!
